Every Saturday, at Place Charles-Estes Park on the corner of Sherbrooke and Maddison, a group of volunteers pitches a mess-tent, sets up some containers, and serves free food to the community. No barriers, no bureaucracy, no questions asked.
The group is called Food Not Bombs NDG, they started in July of this year. The organizers saw a lack of food security in the NDG neighbourhood, rising costs of groceries were worsening the situation. Rather than appeal to standard charitable practices the group just got together and began serving.
The group is ow facing its first winter. They recently decided they will continue to serve outside through the coming cold months in order to keep the barrier to access as low as possible for their meals.
