Linda Downey, founder of the Storehouse Foodbank in Wellington, was presented with a Civic Recognition Certificate on Tuesday for her contribution to the community and her tireless efforts helping residents with essentials and guiding them to supportive services in the area.
Downey realized many years ago that there was a growing food insecurity problem, mostly among seniors, in the western areas of Prince Edward County.
As a young woman, Linda was a single parent of two children and depended on the kindness of others to make ends meet. After moving to the County in 1992, she wanted to give back so immersed herself in volunteer work that connected her to the community. Linda noticed the struggles of many residents who were unable to access the foodbank in Picton. In 2007, she founded the Storehouse Foodbank in Wellington distributing food, clothing, household items and furniture to those in need.
