A number of local groups and organizations on Amherst Island have come together to develop and host the first ever Winter Festival on the island this weekend.
The idea was brought to the Amherst Island Community Alliance (AICA) by one if its members, Paul Juniper. Juniper is also a member of the Great Lakes Island Alliance, where he initially got the idea. Juniper then sought out local groups, organizations and businesses who wanted to be involved.
The festival features activities for participants of all ages. These include winter themed-crafts, a car rally, and an ultimate frisbee demonstration. The day kicks off with a free pancake breakfast at St. Paul’s Church.
There are no official plans for future winter festivals, but Juniper notes that some islanders, and some of those involved in the festival, have already begun referring to this one as the “first annual.”
The festival will take place on the island Saturday Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m.
