A significant fire engulfed a historic building Tuesday morning in downtown Sherbrooke, leaving 14 Wellington South St. in ruins.
Sherbrooke City Assistant General Manager Gaetan Drouin reported that the four-story structure is now in defensive mode, with firefighters battling the flames using high-flow jets.
Director of the Sherbrooke Fire Department Martin Primeau confirmed that the original structure is unsalvageable and emphasized the risk of collapse. With 50 firefighters from five stations actively engaged, the primary focus now is protecting adjacent buildings.
A crisis management team has been activated, and an emergency shelter is open for evacuees up to 80 Wellington South St. For shelter information, contact 819-821-1928.
