Fire control in our new and warming climate is proving to be a very difficult challenge which requires new research and new approaches. But sometimes, lessons from the past can also provide a way forward.
Dr. Kira Hoffman is a professional fire ecologist and former wildfire firefighter. Hoffman’s research focuses on how humans have used fire for millennia to manage and enhance their natural surroundings.
Dr. Hoffman gathered this traditional knowledge while at the University of British Columbia (UBC) through her work with the Haíłzaqv / Heiltsuk, Wuikinuxv, and Nuxalk nations of BC’s Central Coast.
She is presenting her research and tools in a presentation in Smithers, BC tonight (Thursday, January 18th) at 7:30.
