With support from the Minister of Transport, Loyalist Township will appoint Helm Management Services as the project manager for commissioning the Amherst Islander II.
They also received support for petitioning Transport Canada to defer the maintenance on the dock for the current ferry. Deputy Mayor Nathan Townend noted how these steps help move the project forward.
“We really do feel that we have the support all the way to the top to do what we need to do,” said Townend.
Township representatives met with the Minister of Transportation at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association Conference in Toronto last week.
Helm will be able to help the township implement a more defined outline of the plan going forward. According to Townend, this will include time-lines, and a communications plan to keep the public informed.
Townend noted that with the help of Helm, the ferry service to the island will remain as uninterrupted and sustainable as possible.
