Prince Edward County received news that their application through the Accelerator Housing Fund for $14.2 million had been turned down.
Most of the funding was ear marked for affordable housing projects with the main program being the purchase and the redevelopment of the vacant Queen Elizabeth School as a community hub and the building of 100 affordable housing units on the property. Agreements to purchase and plans to redevelop the school had been in the works with the school board since 2019.
With a population of over 100,000 people, Prince Edward County had been forced to apply under the Large/Urban stream competing against urban centres for the funding. The message from the panel to the public is that PEC is not giving up on plans to forward.
CJPE News attended the news conference where staff and elected officials expressed their disappointment in the government decision.
