Housing Minister France-Elaine Duranceau’s temporary eviction moratorium is receiving cautious support from tenants’ rights groups one week after being tabled in Quebec’s National Assembly.
If passed, Bill 65 would implement a three-year moratorium on evictions for the subdivision, enlargement, or change of use of a dwelling. It would also add new protections against not just eviction but also repossession in the case of low-income seniors, who have lived in their unit for at least ten years.
CKUT spoke to Regroupement des comités logement et associations de locataires du Québec (RCLALQ) spokesperson Cedric Dussault about the new protections, as well as what they’d like to see added to the bill.
When reached for comment by CKUT, a Ministry of Housing spokesperson wrote that “evictions from private seniors’ residences are covered by Bill 65, unless it is a change of use authorized by Santé Québec following a rigorous process established by law.”
