The Esk’etemc First Nation has secured a $147 million settlement with the Canadian government, recognizing the loss of water rights dating back to the late 1800s.
This settlement addresses over a century of denied access to water for agriculture on Indian Reserve Number 6 (IR #6), which hindered the community’s economic opportunities and sustainability.
CFNR spoke with Chief Fred Robbins and he highlighted the settlement’s significance in correcting historical injustices and planning for the community’s future. They intend to use the funds to benefit both current and future generations.
A spokesperson for Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada provided a statement to CFNR: “the successful resolution of specific claims is a key step in Canada’s ongoing journey of reconciliation with First Nations one that acknowledges and addresses the wrongs of the past and helps to build a better future for all Canadians. Canada is pleased to see the resolution of Esk’etemc First Nation’s Water Specific Claim.”
