Opponents of Quebec’s secularism law faced a major setback yesterday when the Quebec Court of Appeal upheld the contentious Bill 21.
The bill bans people porting or wearing religious symbols from entering or changing jobs within state employment, including teaching.
In its Feb. 29 ruling, the appeals court overturned a 2021 Superior Court decision that had carved out a possible exception for English school boards in the province, pending a judgment on appeal. The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) challenged the bill on the grounds it impeded rights of linguistic minority communities to manage their own education.
CKUT was joined by EMSB Chair Joe Ortona to discuss the impact of the latest ruling.
