Movies, personal stories, poetry and other arts are part of the work of Dr. Sarah de Leeuw, a published author and professor who has had her Tier 2 Canada Research Chair position in Humanities and Health Inequities renewed for another five years.
The goal of the award is to recognize researchers and research which blend humanities and health sciences. For example, practising doctors could reduce inherent biases if they know a patient’s background, because they would have context for their patient’s life and situation when providing care.
This prestigious award, worth $500,000 over five years, is provided by Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program, a federal initiative intended to attract and retain exceptional scholars in a number of fields.
Dr. de Leeuw is a professor in the Northern Medical Program, Health Sciences, the NRES Graduate Program, conducting research in Gender Studies and serving in the Office of Research and Innovation. She also has a BFA degree in creative writing from University of Victoria.
