People in Windsor Detroit often see the river as just another waterway. With a lot of the history of the Detroit River being unknown to both sides of the border and the busy lives citizens live, convincing local Canadians and Americans of the area’s significance can be difficult.
A local initiative called The Detroit River Project aims to change that by showing people what’s special about the Detroit River. The organization will be hosting a symposium on this topic on December 8th.
The Detroit River Project aims to memorialize the Detroit River border as a World Heritage Site, similar to the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty. Kimberly Simmons, the President and Executive Director of the Detroit River project describes the importance of the project, the journey it has had, and the reasoning for some pushback on the project.
