Sherry McKay and Stephanie Pangowish, members of The Deadly Aunties comedy group, have teamed up to create a $2000 bursary to be split between two university students.
“A Deadly Auntie is someone who’s like a second mom, you know, to community. They are for the children, the youth, and people that need them.”, McKay explains.
They drew inspiration to create the bursary from their desire to give back to their communities and from their shared experiences as mothers while moving through post-secondary education.
The bursary is available to any Indigenous post-secondary student who lives in Manitoba or Ontario, applicants will have to share how humor has helped them with their healing journey.
McKay and Pangowish will choose the bursary recipients on November 8th and hope to create more bursaries.
