A non-profit in Dartmouth is warning local charities about the risk of donation scams as the holiday season approaches.
The North Grove, which provides food services through a community garden along with regular family programming and resources, say they were contacted via email by a person claiming their husband died and left a $100,000 donation to the organization in their will.
Despite some initial skepticism, a cheque for the six-figure amount eventually arrived and was then deposited. Shortly after, the alleged donor began making some suspicious demands.
CKDU spoke with Anne-Marie McElrone, director of development and communications at The North Grove, to hear the full story — along with Cst. Mitch Thompson, an investigator with the Nova Scotia RCMP’s Commercial Crime Section, on how individuals and charities are being targeted through multi-million-dollar fraud operations across Canada.
