After an investigation by the Integrity Commissioner, it was decided that Counc. Jeff McLaren will receive a reprimand and a 30-day suspension of pay for breaching the City’s Member Code of Conduct.
The rest of Council filed a formal complaint with the Commissioner in February 2023. McLaren was accused of leaking confidential closed-meeting information in email exchanges with community members regarding an issue in his district. The final report recommending the two sanctions came before Council at their last meeting.
Throughout this process, McLaren has maintained his innocence, claiming that all of the information in the emails had already been made public and that the Integrity Commission is engaging in “a tyrannical abuse of power”.
While he received some support from fellow councillors, the majority voted for the recommended reprimand and dock in pay.
