Six Nations Chief, Sherri-Lyn Hill announced to the community that the controversial Bill C-53 (an “Act respecting the recognition of certain Métis governments in Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan”) will not be moving forward in the house of commons after moving through the legislative process since its introduction on Indigenous Peoples Day in 2023.
Chief Hill spoke during the Dec. 16 general finance meeting on the bill being discussed at the Standing Committee for Indigenous and Northern Affairs Dec. 9 meeting, where Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Gary Anandasangaree announced the bill would be “hard to continue in it’s current form”.
Six Nations Elected Council and many First Nations communities in Ontario have opposed the passing of the bill, stating the claims of organizations like the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) and others alike are false and believe their rights as First Nations peoples under the Indian Act are in jeopardy, if passed.
