Six Nations Elected Council is discussing the development of its own land registry system due to frustrations with the federal Additions to Reserve (ATR) policy.
Currently, the community has to go to the federal government when when looking to purchase or add lands to the existing reserve.
Council has voiced it’s frustrations with the Additions to Reserve (ATR) policy previously, stating that Six Nations has nearly 1,000 acres of lands sitting in this process.
During the Feb. 13 general council meeting, Coun. Helen Miller detailed that the policy is currently undergoing a redesign set to have legislative changes made by 2025. She says now is the time for Six Nations to voice how they would like to see the policy changed.
Coun. Miller says she has reached out to both Indigenous Services Canada and Crown Indigenous Relations Northern Affairs Canada to have them come and speak on the ATR policy changes at an upcoming council meeting.
