Six Nations Elected Council and its Consultation and Accommodation Process (CAP) team said it is frustrated with the federal government’s process the community must go through with land purchases.
When land is added to the existing reserve land, or a new reserve is created, the community must go through a Additions to Reserve (ATR) policy process.
On Monday, a Band Council Resolution was needed to be passed by Council in order to transfer information on two properties that have been in the ATR process since the 1990s.
Council and CAP say the process is “unsatisfactory” as Six Nations has nearly 1,000 acres of lands sitting in this process.
Coun. Helen Miller says rather than going through ATR process, she would like to see it be recognized as a “return of the lands” from the federal government.
“We’re buying land that the feds’ stole from us.”
