A local to Cortes is returning to the island to complete their Masters thesis on the health and wellbeing of the community.
Kiera Tsakonas, an M.Sc Candidate in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, seeks to understand how the welfare on Cortes Island is impacted by climate events and the community responses to them.
“When large disasters happen, it’s oftentimes civil society that steps in to provide a lot of emergency response. And the more mitigation measures that we can do at the community level with these types of organizations, the better,” said Tsakonas.
Tsakonas will interview willing participants that are involved in the social profit and non-profit sectors to learn about community responses to climate events and “how disaster risk reduction measures at the community scale can have co-benefits for human, animal and ecosystem health.”
