A redfish moratorium that’s been in place in the province since 1995 has been lifted, but harvesters are not happy with the quota allocation.
Redfish have made a comeback during the past decade and, recently, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) announced a phased approach to re-open the Unit 1 redfish fishery this year with a minimum total allowable catch of 25,000 tonnes.
Corner Brook MHA Gerry Byrne says the quota is so low, fish harvesters on the west coast can catch it in about half a day. He talks about a former commitment made by the former fisheries minister during a visit to the Bay of Islands and CKVB News spoke with the MHA.
Other stories in this CKVB newscast include: man arrested after an assault at a Corner Brook boarding home, police find a weapon during a traffic stop in Corner Brook, and lots of fun for seniors as Winter Carnival continues.
