At the May 21st council meeting in Sherbrooke, the approval of the quartier Well Sud parking lot’s exterior staircase and metal facades project, estimated at $3.65 million, sparked significant debate. Several council members opposed the investment, citing budget concerns and priority mismanagement.
Paul Gingues voiced his disapproval, saying, “We must stop investing in this parking lot.” Claude Charron also dissented, emphasizing the need to allocate funds to other pressing projects.
Conversely, Fernanda Luz supported the staircase, highlighting the importance of providing public access and enhancing safety. “Considering all the money injected into the sector, it’s crucial to complete the ‘finishing’ of the project,” she argued.
Joanie Bellerose advocated for using wood instead of aluminum for the facade, promoting environmental benefits despite its shorter lifespan. Despite the opposition, the council approved the project by a majority, moving forward with the staircase and facade enhancements.
