The Concordia Research and Education Workers Union (CREW) is back at the bargaining table this year with the university. One of their demands is a wage increase for teaching and research assistants to $45 hourly.
Teaching assistants at Concordia currently make $29 an hour. The union says this isn’t enough to keep up with the steep cost of living. The union argues that $45 hourly is fair, comparing what TA wages are like at other universities, with wages at $51.93 at the University of Toronto $49.02 at the University of Ottawa, and here at Montreal’s own McGill university: $36.26.
At 1:00pm on Thursday November 7, a group of about 50 union members rallied outside of the Guy Metro building, which houses Concordia Administration offices. CJLO attended the rally and spoke with a member of the bargaining team Jason Langford, a TA in the geography apartment who says he works three jobs to make ends meet.
Concordia would not provide a comment as to not affect the bargaining process.
