With the 2024 Alberta Winter Games approaching in Grande Prairie, it was announced Monday morning that the 2026 Winter Games will be hosted by the City of Cold Lake, the Town of Bonnyville and the Village of Glendon.
The 25th rendition of the Games will see athletes aged 11 to 16 will come through the region and compete across a variety of sports including hockey, ringette, speedskating, skiing, and more.
Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland said in a press conference that he’s excited for his city and region to host the games, and for the economic outcome as he predicts the Games will bring in “a couple hundred-thousand dollars.”
Copeland was in his seat when the Winter Games were last in the region in 2010, and he says that the facilities in Cold Lake, Bonnyville, and Glendon have seen upgrades since and, “are going to be in good standing” by the time the 2026 Games arrive.
Grande Prairie hosts the 2024 Games this week from Feb. 16-19.
