Cobourg Police recovered 83 stolen shopping carts from local stores, worth an estimated $50,000 minimum, during a roundup within the town on Saturday.
The value of each cart ranges from $600 to $2000 each.
Fifty-three of the carts were retrieved from the encampment on the former Brookside Youth Detention Centre property. All shopping carts were returned to their respective stores.
No charges were laid Saturday, but there have been three in subsequent days. One charge was laid on Sunday, two on Tuesday, and police caution there could be more going forward.
Cobourg Police Sergeant Janice MacDonald, who led the Shopping Cart Reclaim Project, says anyone who finds an abandoned cart can call police on the non-emergency line at 905-372-6821 or contact stores directly.
