Just over a year since Kingston declared Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), Gender Based Violence (GBV) and family violence an epidemic, the city has provided one year update a report covering the action that has been taken on the motion.
In 2023, council unanimously declared these pervasive forms of violence an epidemic in the Kingston community. As of today, 95 municipalities have declared IPV an epidemic, urging the province to do the same.
Over the past year the city and community partners have been collecting data and working on initiatives to tackle the issue, including a KFL&A Public Health report in the spring of 2024 providing an overview of violence in the KFL&A area and the release of the IPV Survivor’s Handbook by the Kingston Frontenac Anti-Violence Coordinating Committee (KFACC).
Listen to the full story to hear from Ruth Noordegraaf, Director of Community Development & Well Being with the city and Paula Laughlin, Executive Director of Victim Services of Kingston and Frontenac and member of KFACC.
