The City of Nanaimo will be spending this May’s Invasive Species Month working to remove invasive plants throughout the city.
Mayor of Nanaimo Leonard Krog spoke to CHLY about the work parties hosted by the city for those interested in getting involved in plant removal. The work parties focus on removing Scotch Broom, which Krog says is one of the most commonly seen invasive plants in Nanaimo.
Gail Wallin, executive director for the Invasive Species Council of BC, spoke with CHLY about the huge threat invasive plants pose to the local ecosystem.
Wallin says it is due to overcrowding and invasive plants out-competing with native plants that have an impact. That then causes harm to insects and animals that live in the area.
She says it is important to know the different characteristics of invasive plants when magazining them as they produce seeds or roots differently, or may be toxic.
