As the Canada Post strike enters its third week, many local non-profit and charity organizations have experienced or anticipate an impact on their donations.
The strike comes at a crucial time of the year for many charities. According to surveys conducted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, many charities receive at least half of their annual donations during the final three months of the year, with December being the most important month.
The Kingston Humane Society, normally in the full swing of their annual fundraiser, are presently over $10,000 short of the funds usually raised at this time in previous years. Salvation Army Kingston also reported that their numbers are down this year at the start of their annual Hamper and Toy Drive campaigns.
In spite of the challenge, Kingston organizations and donors have been finding creative ways to carry on with fundraising efforts; including adding drop-off locations throughout the city and increasing online presence.
