Centre Wellington Council approved using money from the Township’s Heritage Reserve Fund this week to hire an intern to help designate heritage properties in the municipality.
Manager of Planning Services Marianna Iglesias told council at Monday’s meeting that changes to the Ontario Heritage Act mean they have until the end of the year to the register some of the 930 buildings that are listed as having cultural or heritage value or interest. If they are not protected by bylaw before the new year, the property owners can request a demolition permit and get it within days.
Council passed a motion allowing for staff to use money from the Heritage Reserve to hire an intern to help with the process of getting those properties designated.
One councillor also suggested that the number of heritage properties in Centre Wellington could be leveraged to attract tourists to the area.
