The Butterflyway Project is giving out seeds for native flowers which are needed for butterflies, bees and other insects.
Seeds are available for free from Eco-East at local events, or by request, and some plant nurseries have started selling native seeds and plants.
The Butterflyway Project was started by the Suzuki Foundation many years ago and is active in Eastern Ontario through Eco-East, an environmental organization. Shauna Wanamaker, who heads the Butterflyway project within Eco-East, explains how landscaping with native flowers and grasses, reducing mowing and monoculture lawns, and getting away from non-native cultivars, can improve survival of pollinating insects.
