Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) have opposed the addition of the community’s name in the Federal Electoral District known as “Brantford-Brant.”
Council had the choice to either accept or opposed the new name “Brantford-Brant South-Six Nations” during the June 25 General Council meeting.
Many councillors expressed their desire to remain left out of the name with some citing the impact it could have on the community’s land claims, while others wondered what the community reaction would be if the name was included in the Federal Electoral District.
Council also discussed the population growth the community has seen in recent years and the possibility of one day having a riding of its own.
SNEC moved and passed the motion unanimously to oppose the name change and will now communicate with current Brantford-Brant MP Larry Brock to have the request heard.
