On Feb. 16th, the Blood Tribe signed a memorandum of understanding to continue the work they have done with the Lethbridge Wellness Centre and Stabilization Unit, an emergency shelter in Lethbridge they have been operating since January 2023.
Along with the memorandum of understanding, the provincial government granted $4 million to the Blood Tribe Department of Health to help grow the shelter that already bolsters 120 shelter spaces.
Along with the provincial government’s grant, the City of Lethbridge is also providing the Blood Tribe Department of Health with $1.4 million to help expand the facility and it’s reach.
According to Charlie Weaselhead, the former Blood Tribe chief and current vice chair of the Blood Tribe Department of Health, the memorandum of understanding, as well as the grants from both governments, is very important because “[vulnerable people’s] cry for help has been heard loud and clear. Both at the government level, an administrative level, and on the ground as well”.
