Recent posts on social media indicate an apparent increase in black bear sightings across the Eastern Townships.
While no specific factors have been identified to explain the uptick, Anais Gasse, a wildlife biologist with the Ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte aux Changements Climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs, suggests that food sources, such as outdoor events or spring hunger, are likely attracting the bears.
Despite these sightings, Gasse assures the listeners that bear attacks in Quebec are extremely rare, and residents should not be overly concerned.
If a bear is spotted near residential areas, residents are advised to contact SOS Braconnage at 1-800-463-2191 or, in an emergency, call 911. More information on bear safety can be found on the ministry’s website.
