Last week, British Columbia’s Attorney General Niki Sharma travelled to Castlegar and Grand Forks to formally apologize to the Doukhobors on behalf of the BC government.
In the 1950s, children were forcibly removed from their homes and placed in facilities in New Denver. These children suffered both physical and psychological abuse.
The apologies came with a compensation package of $10 million. It will primarily be used for promoting cultural heritage and educational programs. $3.75 million has been set aside in a health and wellness fund for survivors to apply for.
CJLY spoke with Lorraine Saliken Walton, a direct descendant of two of the children detained in New Denver, and Attorney General Niki Sharma.
