After they feared nearing extinction, the Vancouver Island marmot is welcoming a record-breaking number of pups.
Only 20 years ago, the Vancouver Island marmot, located solely on Vancouver Island, once only had 38 marmots remaining in the wild. However due to work from the Marmot Recovery Foundation created in 1999, the marmot population is on a steady climb.
In 2023, 301 marmots were observed by the foundation–a steep increase from 204 marmots that were observed in 2022. This year the foundation is celebrating a record-breaking 108 pups were born in one year.
CHLY spoke with Adam Taylor, the executive director of the Marmot Recovery Foundation about the increase in pups and how people can continue to support the work to save the species.
