The Professional Women’s Hockey League took over Vancouver on Wednesday, causing ripples in the local women’s hockey scene. Courtenay Whalers’ goalie Meghann Moore spoke to CHLY earlier this week about women’s hockey in the Comox Valley, and the impacts of a professional game coming to B.C.
Moore says that there is no shortage of demand on Vancouver Island for women’s hockey, with tournaments ranging from Victoria to Port Hardy, and two teams within the Comox Valley.
Skating since she was three years old, Moore has navigated gender stereotypes for playing this “boys’ sport” all her life. She says that this league gives young girls role models, and a path to look forward to as they pursue the sport.
Moore says that women in the Comox Valley interested in playing hockey are welcome to check out the Courtenay Whalers Women’s Hockey Facebook group.
