The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) has allocated $1 million through the Health Care Unburdened Grant program to Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and 5 other partner hospitals in Southeastern Ontario to study how the implementation of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can support healthcare providers in administrative tasks.
The administrative burden forces physicians to divide their attention between patient care and paperwork, adds a significant number of extra hours to their work day, and contributes to burnout.
The initiative aims to evaluate GenAI’s effectiveness in tasks such as recording patient interactions, consolidating information, and generating clinical notes. Participating partner hospitals include Brockville General Hospital, Lennox and Addington County General Hospital, Perth Smith Falls District Hospitals, Providence Care Hospital, and Quinte Health.
AI studies are set to begin this time next year.
