An area on the corner of Upper Lachine Road and Girouard Avenue has been approved by the NDG borough for the planting of a microforest.
A microforest is when a wide range of trees and vegetation are planted in a concentrated area. Micro forests are inspired by the Miyawaki method — developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. The method generates a fast growing forest in a small urban area.
There have been other micro forests planted around Montreal since 2020, but this is the first for the NDG area.
Depending on the availability of shrubs the microforest could see as many as 10 unique tree species planted in under 375 square meters including oaks, hemlocks, hickories, serviceberry trees and more. The micro forest is being developed with the goals of increasing pollination, absorbing atmospheric pollutants, supporting biodiversity and providing habitats for animals, and overall contributing aesthetically to NDG.
