Activists fighting for an end to the fur farming business took to Bloor Street last Friday, protesting the controversial sale of fur products at luxury fashion house, Louis Vuttion.
Toronto’s rally was tied to the upcoming social media campaign, I’d Rather Go Bear Than Wear Fur, that local activists are hoping will challenge public discourse on the use of fur in fashion.
Over the past several years, the Canadian fur industry has been in decline. But as of 2023, it still contributes 800 million dollars a year to the Canadian economy. This includes dryers, dressers, designers and realtors, employing 80,000 Canadians.
Jenny McQueen, a local animal rights advocate, says they’ve sparked international debate on how safe these farms really are. In fact, for over two decades, they’ve been banned in the UK and in another 19 European countries.
