The Elsie Gibbons room at the MRC office in Campbell’s Bay was overflowing on Wednesday night (October 16) as around 50 citizens attended the monthly meeting, mainly to voice their support for changes to the way the MRC calculates its municipal shares. Shares are the fees municipalities pay to the MRC for various services. This is the second meeting in a row with a large attendance related to this issue, made up primarily of residents from the Municipality of Alleyn-et-Cawood.
During the pandemic property boom, the small rural municipality saw a number of vacant lots sell for over their assessed value, which resulted in a significant, bump in their shares this year. This gap between the sale price and the assessed value is taken into account when the shares are calculated, and residents have requested that it be removed from the formula.
