The Amherst Island Community Alliance will be lobbying for the development of a township committee focused on an emergency evacuation plan for the island. There is no such plan in place, currently.
According to David Pickering, a member of the alliance, and an Amherst Island resident, one council member is already on board. Coun. Lorna Willis will be able to bring the issue to council once the alliance has gathered all their relevant resources and information. These steps are currently being taken by Pickering, among other members of the alliance.
Pickering also noted that the alliance may be looking at the township’s new fire chief as another potential point of contact. Kent Readman was announced as the new fire chief and director of Emergency Services on Jan 31. He officially took on the new role on Feb. 26, replacing Fred Stephenson who retired after having served in Loyalist for 28 years.
