In response to recent reports of hikers being attacked by an aggressive bird, Les Sentiers de l’Estrie has closed a trail in Kingsbury until July 15th.
The American goshawk, formerly known as the Northern goshawk, is known for its aggressive behavior, particularly during the breeding season when it vigorously defends its territory and nests.
To provide insight into the situation, CJMQ interviewed Jean Sébastian Guénette, biologist and executive director of Quebecoiseaux.org.
Guénette advises hikers to heed warning sounds emitted by the bird and to retreat immediately to avoid potential attacks. The closure of the Kingsbury trail is deemed significant by Guénette, as it protects both the public and the birds during the breeding season.
While there are no specific projects monitoring the goshawk population, citizen science initiatives like eBird and iNaturalist are utilized. Quebecoiseaux.org, a nonprofit organization, focuses on promoting bird watching and conservation efforts, particularly for species at risk.
