The Alexander First Nation was awarded $50,000 from the Alberta Blue Cross through their Built Together grant program to support the construction of a new outdoor ice rink. Alexander First Nation lies 17km west of Morinville on Treaty 6 territory.
The Built Together program provides healthy living infrastructure projects to five different places in the province each year, according to the Blue Cross. It includes a project in Edmonton, Calgary, a secondary city, a rural community and an Indigenous community. Past Indigenous recipients of the grant include the Paddle Prairie Métis Settlement, Elizabeth Métis Settlement, Enoch Cree Nation, and Maskwacis. Those communities received a walking track, a skate park, a playground, and a fitness park respectively.
