Jean Douglas-Webb, a 78-year-old member of the Abbotsford Gogos, has a goal of raising $7,800 ahead of a 111-kilometre bicycle ride from downtown Hope to her West Abbotsford home.
Douglas-Webb’s ride is planned for Sunday, Sept. 8, National Grandparent’s Day.
This year marks the seventh time she has cycled in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers Campaign, which supports grandmothers raising children orphaned by AIDS. Initially, Douglas-Webb joined the Greater Van Gogos from their second annual team ride in 2018. Since 2022, she rides solo.
“They moved their ride over to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and the route just didn’t work for me. So I do my own ride now,” she said.
“I’m not that experienced a rider and I tried riding with the team and I found it difficult riding in a pack,” she said with a laugh.
Douglas-Webb said excluding the current campaign, she has raised $33,517 total.
