Last week, Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) announced that they now protect two new properties in the region, the Plant Conservation Easement Agreement and the Crescent Trust Property. After these acquisitions, KLT will now protect 41 properties consisting of 7,350 acres of natural area.
KLT’s Director of Community Conservation Thom Unrau explains how a property becomes protected by the organization, and what it means for the future of that land:
“Essentially, as a landowner, you are forfeiting your rights to destroy nature on the land, and holding accountable any future owner to not destroy nature on that land.”
Most of KLT’s protected properties are not open for public access, adds Unrau.
“The purpose, in this case, is, primarily, to hold this land and allow its natural habitats to flourish, and not for any benefit to human interaction, or human use.”
