Toronto City Council has released the 2024 city operating budget with three main cores to receive funding.
At the February 14 budget meeting, three central services highlighted — affordable housing, community safety and transit. Transit will be receiving $30 million, the least of the three priority areas.
With the $30 million, the transit sector of the city has multiple priorities. One is to increase safety by on the TTC by hiring 160 new visible workers to “have more eyes” says Mayor Olivia Chow.
In the budget and in a Dec. 20 TTC board meeting it was agreed that there would be a fare freeze at the 2023 price of $3.35, instead of increasing it.
There will also be provision for the Scarborough busway funding. The busway is currently under construction following the decommissioning of the SRT. It is expect to be completed by 2030.
