Local search group recommends the three T’s of wilderness safety as spring arrives
Spring has sprung and with the season comes ATV riding and exploring the many trails on the west coast. Shawn Street, with the Bay of Islands Volunteer Search and Rescue group, stresses the three T’s of wilderness safety when out in the wilderness: trip plan, take enough essentials and training.
A trip plan” lets someone know where you are going and your expected time of return. Street says the next thing is to “take enough essentials,” like water, emergency blankets, snacks, clothing, flashlight, batteries and something to light a fire. Finally, “training” is essential and riders need to know their GPS and wilderness skills like lighting a fire.
