Gender-affirming clothing event supports those on gender journeys

Supporting diversity and those on gender journeys, local pride group The Coast is Queer is hosting a free clothing event with gender-affirming styles.

Co-founder of The Coast is Queer, Ash Horner, spoke to CHLY about the event and the importance of people going on their gender journey.

Horner Told CHLY about their own journey with gender and how it took them 43 years to finally take the time to find out what gender means to them. They said they hope this event will give transgender and non-binary people a safe space to get new clothing that reflects their authentic selves.

After only starting three years ago hosting more events for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in Nanaimo, The Coast is Queer, along with the First Unitarian Fellowship of Nanaimo is hosting a clothing event to offer a safe space for transgender and non-binary people to find new gender-affirming clothes.

“Unboxing Bravery” journeys through gender identity

Lauren Semple is opening up and sharing their story of the merge between their love of performance art and their queer identity in a show coming to the OV Art Centre.

Created by Semple, Unboxing Bravery explores gender and transgender allyship through the art form of drag. Semple who performs as a drag king under the name Andi Rogynous, wanted to share statistics and education on gender and the transgender experience while sharing their own experience of finding themselves.

CHLY met with Semple before the opening of the show to learn more about it and hear why sharing their experience is so important

Unboxing Bravery will be shown at OV Arts Centre in downtown Nanaimo from November 15 to 17 and November 21 to 23. Tickets can be purchased at the Western Edge Theatre website.

McGill’s TA union is looking to get protections against deadnaming, misgendering on the books

McGill’s Policy on Harassment and Discrimination is up for review this coming academic year, and the Teaching Assistants union, AGSEM, is trying to add explicit protections against deadnaming and misgendering to the document.

The union says they have a letter of understanding from McGill to consider the protections as part of the review. AGSEM is seeking anonymous testimony from members of the McGill community who have experienced deadnaming and misgendering, in order to make its case that specific protections are necessary.

Neither McGill Media Relations nor the Office for Mediation and Reporting responded to a request for comment from CKUT.

Trans Patient Union pushes for better gender-affirming care

The Trans Patient Union started as a group of students pushing for better gender-affirming care at McGill. It’s now become a hub to help Montrealers navigate the complex, ad hoc world of trans healthcare – an area in which most doctors are never trained.

Union member Jacob Williams says he routinely hears about doctors who use outdated or discriminatory practices, despite having many transgender patients. “There’s no way for patients to know this going in and there’s really nobody holding these doctors and providers accountable for how they’re providing care.”

That’s what he and the Union are trying to change – offering resources and best practices not only to patients but to healthcare providers as well.
