Protestors march against education minister’s mixed-gender bathroom ban
On Friday (May 11), around a hundred protestors marched in downtown Montreal against a provincial directive that bans public schools from adding mixed-gender washrooms.
Education Minister Bernard Drainville put forth the directive on May 1. He argued that although new washrooms must be male and female gendered, single-use universal washrooms will be available as well.
The Education Ministry maintains they have “found the right balance to ensure the well-being, respect for privacy and inclusion of all students,” in a statement provided to CKUT. Schools that are over 30 percent of the way through a construction project will be allowed to proceed as planned.
On Friday, CKUT spoke to protestors who say they’re worried the latest directive is a sign of provincial backsliding on trans rights.
