Traditional drummers drum up support for First Responders
Four years ago, the Covid-19 pandemic brought calamity to Prince George. Many people remember nightly pot-and-pan clamour in support of First Responders that took place each evening in the earliest days of the pandemic.
Wesley Mitchell led a group which would become the UHNBC (University Hospital of Northern BC) Prince George Traditional Drummers. After the pandemic, drums continued as the group welcomed all every Monday at 6 pm in the UHNBC parking lot.
And now, the drummers have been recognized officially by the city of Prince George. March 18-25th 2024 has been designated UHNBC Prince George Traditional Drummers Week through a Mayoral Proclamation.
Member Imani Miller picked up a drum at the beginning, and has integrated her participation with healing alongside her colleagues at the Medicine Wheel Cafe. She’s heartened that now in 2024, the group is invited to citywide events, performing with a diverse membership.
