Sackville, NS Thrift store raises money for end-of life care charity Halifax Hospice

The Hospice Thrift Store, located in Lower Sackville, NS is asking for designer handbag donations for an upcoming online auction.

All the proceeds from the auction are going towards Halifax Hospice, a group that works to provide grief care and end-of-life support. The thrift store is accepting handbag donations until January 17th. The auction will be held at the “Feeling the Love” Gala in February.

Rachel Boehm is the executive director of Halifax hospice. In this interview she talks more about the importance of end-of life and grief care, the positive impact of the handbag auction, and how people can get more involved in the event.

Santas for Seniors organizer hopes for quick end to Canada Post strike

The organizer of a program in Queens County that helps seniors over the holidays is hoping for a little Christmas magic this year.

Santas for Seniors Queens County connects low-income seniors with others who want to help them have a good holiday. And it relies on Canada Post to help make it happen.

Organizer Kendra Shot says this year, she’s worried about how the postal strike may affect the festive fundraiser’s fifth year.

It’s helped hundreds of Queens County seniors each year.

Anyone can nominate a senior, or seniors can nominate themselves. Donors then “adopt” a senior, buy a Christmas card and a gift card, put those into a stamped envelope and drop them off at three locations in Queens County. Shot and her volunteers then address each card and mail them.

Stanley Cup parade raises $17,000 in t-shirt sales, to be donated to charitable support services

Six Nations Elected Council say $17,000 was generated from t-shirt sales from the Brandon Montour Stanley Cup parade celebrations that took place on Six Nations on July 24.

Council says those funds will be donated to the Jay Silverheels Complex that provides many different support services to senior and disabled community members.

Coun. Greg Frazer made the announcement during the Aug. 9 Chief and Council Radio Show. He also announced that Six Nations Minor Hockey, Six Nations Minor Lacrosse and Field Lacrosse, Six Nations Softball and the Six Nations Figure Skating Club will each receive $3,200 from funds generated from community watch parties that took place throughout the Stanley Cup Final that were also hosted by council.

Frazer thanked the community for its support and says these funds raised will now go back to the community for a good cause.

MMIWG2S annual bike ride raising funds for Hummingbird Healing Lodge

The third annual ride for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2 spirits (MMIWG2S) is raising funds for the Hummingbird Healing Lodge on Six Nations.

The Hummingbird Healing Lodge is a traditional healing facility that provides services to disabled community members, trans and two-spirit people who face barriers to accessing ceremony.

This years ride will take place on Aug. 24 and will be a 156 km ride stretching from Toronto to Six Nations and then to Hamilton.

Otahyǫ’:ni: ‘Wolf⁷a:z’ Bomberry, organizer for the ride, says the event was created to contribute back to the MMIWG2S issue and this year’s ride will see the funds raised donated back to “No more Silence” towards renovations to its Hummingbird Healing Lodge.

Small town, big hearts — Liverpool fundraiser scores $16,000 for cancer research

A charity hockey game in Liverpool on the weekend raised more than $16,000 for cancer research.

Queens Hockey Fights Cancer was hosted by Memories Cafe & Eatery and Inglis Kassouf Financial Solutions at Queens Place Emera Centre on Saturday. It was organized by Bruce and Melanie Inglis of Liverpool, who own both businesses.

The couple organized the event in honour of a couple of friends going through their own struggles with cancer.

Jack Stephenson was part of his childhood in Queens County. The Maine college student is currently undergoing treatment for sarcoma. Anthony MacDiarmid of Liverpool is also battling cancer. A longtime supporter of hockey and community causes, he coached the all-stars to victory.

Fundraising continues for new school playground equipment that the school budget doesn’t pay for

School boards don’t provide funding for playgrounds. It’s up to volunteer parent committees to raise the money for the equipment.

That’s why $40,000 has been raised towards a new playground at Terry Fox Public School in Cobourg.

Only a set of monkey bars remains after the previous playground structure was removed in 2020 due to safety concerns.

The total cost for a new structure, including installation, will exceed $100,000.

CFWN spoke with committee members Doreen Parker and Jen Russell about the new playground, and also about why they are fundraising for other school projects too.

10th annual Kilometres for Kids returns to Cobourg earlier than usual

Kilometres for Kids, now in its 10th year as a key fundraiser for Rebound Child & Youth Services in Cobourg, has moved to May rather than fall, swapping places with the Ride for Rebound cycling fundraiser.

In addition, the 10-kilometre walk or run category has been re-added to the Kilometres for Kids event, which takes place this Sunday starting and ending at Donegan Park. There is also a five-kilometre route and the event is open to all ages and family pets are welcome as well.

CFWN spoke with Rebound executive director Nicole Wood about what programs the organization offers, Kilometres for Kids and the new Port Hope Wellness Hub.

Moccasin Walk Fundraiser looks to elevate goals, support hospice construction in second year

After raising $13,000 during the first annual 5 km Moccasin Walk For Hospice Fundraiser, Six Nations Health Foundation and Six Nations Health Services (SNHS) have increased this year’s fundraiser goal to $20,000 for the second annual event.

Chasity Vanevery, SNHS health communications officer, says with no current hospice facility within Six Nations, community members need to go off-territory in order to receive those services. The funds raised from this year’s event will go directly to building a hospice facility that’s planned to be constructed on Fourth Line.

Vanevery says with the event taking place during Six Nations’ Community Awareness Month, she’s confident the event can reach it’s goal of $20,000 with the community’s support.

The event will take place May 11 at the Six Nations Blue Track located at 1738 Fourth Line in Ohsweken.

Queen’s student embarks on month-long hike for Lionhearts

Connor Hamlyn, a 4th year Queen’s University student will be embarking on a 900 km hike along the Bruce Trail on May 4 raising money for Lionhearts.

Hamlyn has volunteered and worked as a summer student at Lionhearts over the past few years, and will be spending the next month hiking the Bruce Trail to raise funds and awareness for the organization.

Lionhearts has various initiatives which support the Kingston community, including the Student Food Box Program, gathering and redistributing food and household goods to local nonprofits and community groups, and running two overnight shelters.

Hamlyn’s fundraising efforts quickly gained traction, already surpassing his original $1,000 goal and now sitting just below the new $2,000 goal. “It’s gained some community support all around Kingston, Hamlyn says. “I’m so happy that this was done. And I don’t know what I would have done if it was just hiking for myself.”

12 year old girl raises $1,000 for local Indigenous workshops

Kaet Lynn Wells, a 12 year old girl in Osgoode, Ontario, has recently raised $1,000 selling painted shirts for Orange Shirt Day.

Orange Shirt Day, known also as the “National Day for Truth and Reconciliation,” is recognized every year on Sept. 30, and commemorates the history of residential schools in Canada, survivors and families and communities.

With this money, she plans on adding Indigenous workshops to the Osgoode Youth Association for those in her community looking to get in touch or simply learn more about Indigenous culture.

Variety show fundraiser taking stage on Cortes Island in March

Originally scheduled for February, Mansons Hall is hosting a Variety Show on March 9. The event is kickstarting new performing arts programming at the hall.

Cora Moret is organizing the event but wouldn’t spill what the lineup has in store.

“I wouldn’t want to ruin any of the surprises but we will have some live music, we’ll have some original music, we’ll have some comedy, we’ll have some unexpected guest MCs,” Moret shared.

There are still a couple slots open for performers, who must attend a rehearsal on Saturday, March 2.

Au Diapason launches ‘flagship’ fundraiser to support operational costs

Au Diapason has launched the 15th edition of its “La March/La Course” fundraiser to raise necessary funds in order to continue providing free palliative care and end-of-life support services to people in Brome-Missisquoi and Haute-Yamaska.

Over the years, La March/La Course has grown to become the Au Diapason Foundation’s “flagship” event, now raising 25% of the annual funds needed to support the work of La Maison and the l’Équipe d’accompagnement Au Diapason, explained Executive Director Charlotte Evans.

According to Evans, the provincial government covers 50% of the operational expenses for Au Diapason, but the other 50% – equivalent to $1 million annually – is left up to the Au Diapason Foundation. With regular medical equipment renewals and maintenance and repairs for La Maison, fundraisers like La March/La Course allow Au Diapason to directly invest in “the care and services that we offer,” added Evans.
